More Sessions May Be Required

In younger clients, an artist may be able to do 3-4 layers of pigment during an appointment, allowing for more even and saturated color after the first session. With thinner skin, an artist has to go slowly and may only be able to do 2 passes before the skin becomes enflamed and bleeds. Significant bleeding will cause the color to become solid and look like a tattoo, so it's important to be cautious. Multiple sessions allow the artist to build up the color gradually, ensuring a natural-looking result that complements your features without traumatizing the skin.

Pigment Retention Can Be Less Predictable

The texture and composition of mature skin can make it more challenging for pigment to retain its color. As we age, we collect scars and wrinkles that cause the skin to be less even. An experienced artist will use a light color during an initial appointment to test the skin and see how different areas hold the pigment. We do two sessions for our original service so that we can start light and go darker as needed during the second session. Usually, touch-ups only require one appointment, especially since we're working with existing clients and already know how their skin will absorb the pigment.

The unpredictable color retention with mature skin textures requires a more conservative approach to adding color, sometimes requiring two sessions to achieve the desired look.
