Ombre Brows and Mature Skin: A Guide

As we age, our skin undergoes various changes, including a decrease in elasticity and moisture. These changes can affect how permanent makeup, such as ombre brows, interacts with the skin. If you have mature skin and are considering ombre brows, here's what you need to know about the process, potential challenges, and how to achieve the best results.

More Sessions May Be Required

Mature skin tends to be thinner and more delicate, which can affect how well the pigment holds. As a result, individuals with mature skin may require more sessions to achieve the desired results. In younger clients, an artist may be able to do 3-4 layers of pigment during an appointment, allowing for more even and saturated color after the first session. With thinner skin, an artist has to go slowly and may only be able to do 2 passes before the skin becomes enflamed and bleeds. Significant bleeding will cause the color to become solid and look like a tattoo, so it's important to be cautious. Multiple sessions allow the artist to build up the color gradually, ensuring a natural-looking result that complements your features without traumatizing the skin.

Pigment Retention Can Be Less Predictable

The texture and composition of mature skin can make it more challenging for pigment to retain its color. As we age, we collect scars and wrinkles that cause the skin to be less even. An experienced artist will use a light color during an initial appointment to test the skin and see how different areas hold the pigment. Each person, and even each section of the brow, can be different and absorb varying levels of color. Mature skin may also take longer to heal, which can impact the evenness of color.

Future Touch-Ups May Require 2 Sessions

We do two sessions for our original service so that we can start light and go darker as needed during the second session. Usually, touch-ups only require one appointment, especially since we're working with existing clients and already know how their skin will absorb the pigment.

Due to the delicate nature of mature skin, artists may need to take it just as slow during touch-ups as they doing during initial appointments. The unpredictable color retention with mature skin textures requires a more conservative approach to adding color, sometimes requiring two sessions to achieve the desired look. While this may require additional time and patience, it ensures that the skin is not overworked or traumatized, leading to better long-term results.

Choosing the Right Artist is Key

Ombre brows require a gentle touch and a soft technique, especially for more delicate skin. An experienced artist understands the importance of using a light hand to avoid causing trauma to the skin. They will also know how to create a soft, natural gradient that mimics the look of real eyebrows, even when a client has no natural brow hair. An inexperienced artist is likely to go too deep or cause damage to the skin with improper needle techniques. Since mature skin is fragile, unpredictable, and takes longer to heal, an experienced artist is necessary for the desired result.

Ombre brows offer a beautiful solution for enhancing eyebrows, especially for those with mature skin. However, it's important to approach the process with caution and go slow to ensure the best results. Choosing an experienced artist who understands the unique needs of mature skin and prioritizes a gentle touch is key. With proper care and attention, ombre brows can provide long-lasting, natural-looking results that enhance your overall appearance and boost your confidence.
