Is Microblading Good for Dark Skin Tones?

Well, we have good and bad news. Let's start with the bad news: microblading isn't for you.

The good news? Our Signature Ombre is!

Many things in the beauty industry are not designed with darker skin tones in mind. Because of this, correct information can be hard to find! When looking for healed results of microblading, people of color may struggle to find examples on skin tones similar to their own.

Because of this, we often see new clients with old microblading jobs that they're unhappy with. These clients have spent hundreds of dollars for minimal results because the strokes faded very quickly.

We recently had a client come into Aphrodite's Secret who had a story to tell about her microblading experience. The business she went to insisted that she needed to come back for 4-5 sessions in order to have the desired results. But after just a few months, the strokes had completely faded and were no longer visible. This happens frequently with darker skin tones, but nobody had told her. She was shocked when we informed her that microblading isn't ideal for darker skin tones. Why hadn't anyone told her? All of her friends were looking for microblading and were all told the same things: you will need more sessions and more frequent touch-ups.

This client was smart because she felt like something was off and stopped going. Instead of risking skin trauma from repeated microblading sessions, she looked into other options and found our Signature Ombre Brow.

Here are some things we want our clients of color to know:

When it comes to melanin, everyone has pheomelanin and eumelanin in different quantities. Pheomelanin is responsible for pink and red tones in skin, particularly in the lips and hands.

Eumelanin is the type of melanin that is responsible for brown, black, and gray coloration in skin. Pigments are quick to fade in skin types with high eumelanin.

A pigment brand we use even has guidelines that state their pigment is not suitable for microblading on those with high levels of eumelanin because it will fade too quickly.

Holding out hope for a better result is totally understandable if you've spent a lot of money on it. But if a business is trying to convince you to come back several times within a short time period, it's better to stop and talk to another brow specialist before you continue. Your skin and brows will thank you.

If color isn't staying, a brow specialist should recommend another method.

Microblading cuts into the skin. With each touch-up, the chance for permanent skin trauma is increased. There is a higher likelihood of scarring and discoloration with repeated sessions. Our Signature Ombre brow is gentler on the skin, but also won't require touch-ups as frequently.

With our Signature Ombre Brow, touch-ups are infrequent and much gentler. The brows can last for 3-5 years without any color boosts!

Our artists have experience will all skin tones and have studied extensively to understand the correct colors and methods that will look the most natural on each individual client. We do not believe in one-brow-fits-all, and we are dedicated to making sure that the best method is selected for each client.

Still feeling unsure? We know it can be confusing, so we designed a quiz that can help you get a better idea of what would be the best choice for you. While we still heavily encourage a consultation, the quiz is a great first step!
