Microblading, Nano, and Ombre

What’s the difference between microblading, nano, and ombre?

Microblading is a manual technique of applying permanent makeup where it is similar to getting a tattoo.  A tattooing blade is filled with pigment and is applied directly to the brow in place of actual hair.  The tool that is used in the process is made of 12-16 needles, but is not flexible, making the process sometimes a little longer to do. Microblading can last up to 18 months after the initial application, with one touch-up appointment after 6 weeks.

Nano is a similar form of permanent makeup to microblading, except it uses more machine-like strokes for the color distribution as opposed to manual application.  Nano uses a smaller, more flexible needle that creates small dots of color to create the stroke of hair.  This creates a crisper, more defined look of the brow than with microblading.  This method also causes little to no trauma on the skin, so it is perfect for those that don’t want the look of having freshly done eyebrows.  Microblading will tend to have more scabbing and has a higher risk of scarring than nano. It also tends to last much longer than microblading, on average between 1.5 to 2.5 years.

Ombre creates small dots of pigments that will build up over time to reach the correct color that matches the natural eyebrow hair color. This service lasts longer than microblading services, on average from 1-3 years as opposed to up to 18 months. It works for all skin types, and is perfect for those that typically use pencil or powder to fill in their eyebrows for that perfect look.  The typical design of the ombre is set up where the hair closest to the nose is a softer color, and it transitions to a darker shade as the hair moves to the tail of the eyebrow.

How do we do it?

Before any of our services, our artists would like to consult with you about the type of brows you are looking for.  Based on your typical makeup looks, your lifestyle, age, and skin type, we can find the best method for you out of these three procedures.

We have found that the same method does not work for every single person.  That’s why we spend so much time consulting and mapping out brows for our clients.  We want you to leave your services feeling more confident and comfortable with your brows, and we pride ourselves on giving that quality time to make certain the right look fits you.  We may even offer a combination of methods that we think will work best for you if it will give you the best look for your lifestyle.

Based on the type of service we decide with you to provide, we will break up our sessions into 2-3 appointments to give a base color for the brow, and then build on that color over at least one more session 4-6 weeks later.  This gives the brows time to heal and take on the color.  After your second or third session, we will set up an appointment for a year later for a possible touch-up.  Some clients find that after a year, the color of their brows is still good, and they do not need a touch-up for another year or two after the initial touch-up appointment.  It is also possible that you may need more sessions, especially if you are having a color correction service done to your brows. We will consult with you to determine what is the best plan of action moving forward for you and your brows when the time comes.

Benefits of permanent make-up (Image)

  • Low maintenance eyebrows
  • More natural shape and color that fits your lifestyle
  • Easier to perform waxing appointments because of established shape
  • Color correction is an option if your brows have been done before and are turning a color other than what was originally done

What should be expected during a permanent make-up session?

There will be scabbing after each session, making the eyebrows appear darker than intended.  This is completely normal, and will eventually fade as time progresses.  By the time the second or third session comes around, the color will be more natural looking and will be darkened in the session to match the final result.

The healing process will take time, and will be impacted by your aftercare procedure and whether you are on certain medications.  Some bleeding during the process is normal, but may impact the color if it is profusive.  Please be sure to tell our artists any and all medications you are taking, no matter the kind, especially if they are topical.  Additionally, please inform us if you are prone to bleeding so that we can adjust your permanent make-up plan if necessary.
